Even if your Clie is dead (out of power), you
can use it straight away by connecting to the Battery Extender and new AA batteries.
Standard voltage requirement for charging most Clies
is 5.7V (output of supplied AC charger). 4 x
AA Alkaline batteries total 6V which is ideal for charging all Clies. Fresh,
good (brand) alkaline batteries should be used. (capacity of different brands
differs enormously) Depending on your Clie models
(Li-ion or Li-Polymer batteries equipped), a fresh set of Alkaline batteries can
charge your Clie from nearly out of power to 75% capacity in about 2 hours. From
then on models with Li-Polymer batteries (e.g. 710) accepts further charge very
SLOWLY, while models with Li-ion batteries (e.g. 320) can be charged to 100% in
further 2-3 hours. Subsequent charge with the
same set of batteries will of course take longer. Charge
will also take longer if you are using it at the same time.
Therefore,
whatever you model is, we recommend that you charge your clie with a fresh set
of batteries up to maximum of 3 hours and disconnect, whatever capacity it has
charged to. You can always charge it again when the power gets low. This
way, even with models with Li-polymer batteries, you can charge at least 2-3 times
(more than 4-5 times with Li-ion models) and still with juice left to power up
(and use) a dead Clie until the AA batteries power is finished. So
you should never be afraid of running out of power even on a transcontinental
flight.
Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries could also
be used. They must be good brand, of 1500mAh
or more. Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries are rated
at 1.2v. But in practice the output of a freshly charged set of good AA Ni-MH
batteries total over 5v which is just enough to power and charge a Clie.
Of course the charge time will take longer than Alkaline
batteries, and life is shorter. But this is the most economical way. There
are some Ni-MH batteries rated at 1.25v, which is better, but they are difficult
to find.
