Connection between PPC and Mobile Phones

There are 3 ways you can connect PPC with phones (Sony Z5/J5/Z7, Siemens C/M/S35, S/SL45) for internet/email:

1. Serial Sync Cable + Null Modem Adapter (DB9N) + Data Cable (SNZ5D / SNDJ5 / S25D)
2. PPC Modem cable (PQSM / PHJSM) + Data Cable (SNZ5D / SNDJ5 / S25D)
3. PPC to phone cable (PCZ5M/PCJ5M/PCS3M/PQZ5M/PQJ5M/PQS3M/PJZ5M/PJJ5M/PJS3M)

Supported devices:
PPC - Compaq IPAQ, HP Jornada 540 Series, Casio EM-500, E-115, E-125, running Win CE3.0.  (Other CE3.0 devices should also work but had not been tested, CE2.11 devices may or may not work)
Phones - SONY CMD-Z5 , CMD-J5/Z7, SIEMENS C/M/S35i, S/SL45 (with S25D)
Data Cable - S25D, SNZ5D, SNDJ5
PPC to phone cables - PCZ5M/PCJ5M/PCS3M/PQZ5M/PQJ5M/PQS3M/PJZ5M/PJJ5M/PJS3M

Other phones, data cables or PPC have not been tested at present.

Information provided here are specific for the above combinations of hardware (our own cables) only. Other makes may or may not work.

There are different types of NULL MODEM adapters for different hardware. If you like to make one yourself, see detail.
We have produced this compact Null Modem Adapter specially for our cables:

Null Modem Adapter for connection between PPC Serial Sync Cable and Phone data cable (SNZ5D/SNDJ5/S25D)
Code:DB9N

US$ 5.90

Buy It

(please note our minimum credit card order is $11.50 excluding postage. If you have bought the above data cables from us before we can waive this condition but it becomes expensive as $5 postage has to be added to each order)

(For IPAQ/HP owners without a serial sync cable, you may like to purchase our RS-232 serial modem cable - PQSM/PHJSM (this is NOT a sync cable), then you will not need a null modem adapter, as it will connect the IPAQ/Jornada and SNZ5D/S25D/SNDJ5 directly).
Direct PPC to Phone cable is best.

Different phones are configured differently, as follow:
You may copy and print this for private use
SONY CMD-Z5/J5/Z7
Important: CMD-Z5/J5 is NOT configured for data by default.
If you have not used the phone for data before, you must configure it:
Settings>Call settings>Data services>Serial speed>Automatic (press jog dial)
Automatic serial speed is best for most applications, although almost all speed should work for data.

1 On the PPC: Settings>Connections>Modem>New Connection>
2 Enter a name for the connection: e.g. Sony
3 Select a Modem: Hayes Compatible on Com1
4 Baud Rate: 19200 (you can experiment higher if your network support compression)
5 TAP Advanced
6 Data Bits:8
7 Parity:None
8 Stop Bits: 1
9 Flow Control: Hardware
10 TICK Enter dialing commands manually
11 TAP TCP/IP and/or Name Servers to enter necessary settings for your ISP
12 TAP OK to go back to Make New Connection screen
13 TAP Next
14 Wait for dial tone before dialing - DO NOT TICK
15 TAP Finish

To Connect (with all cables/adapter/phone connected and switch on)
16 Programs>Connections
17 TAP  on SONY (or other name entered at 2)
18 Type in user name and password
19 TICK Save password (if you prefer), then you do not have to enter user name/password again next time.
20 TAP Connect - Manual Dial Terminal appears, then bring up the keyboard (handwriting not recommended)
21 (type) at ENTER (bent arrow), OK should appear on the terminal screen (if not, check all cable connections)
22 (type) at ENTER (bent arrow) once more, OK should appear on the terminal screen
23 (type) atd12345678 (12345678 is your ISP number) ENTER, you should now see Z5 is dialing the number.
24 If your ISP is connected (it may not connect first time), terminal screen will indicate so. Then go on next step or you may have to re-dial again.
25 TAP OK on top right corner of Manual Dial Terminal
26 The screen of Connected to SONY is brought up showing the connection status: authentication process
27 When you hear "plong" and the status shows: connected - you have successfully connected to your ISP

Now you can browse with IE.

This may sound complicated but it is the only way we find which works 100%. If any reader/customer finds a better way please let us know and we'll pass on to our readers/customers.

PS: this instruction is specific for using our SNZ5D / SNDJ5 / PCZ5M / PCJ5M /PQZ5M / PQJ5M / PJZ5M / PJJ5M cable. Other cable (including the original Sony cable) is very unlikely to work. You may try but you may find that you will be wasting your time.

SIEMENS C/M/S35i, SL45
(You can connect S35i/SL45 via infra red to almost all PPC WIN CE3.0 which has infra red. Even so, many would prefer cable connections)
