GPS connection solutions for Nikon DSLR D2X/D2Xs/D2Hs/D200/D3/D300
We are making it easier for for above camera owners to enjoy GPS position tagged photography!
Basic GPS requirement for connecting to Nikon is a GPS that has a serial port and output NMEA 2.01 at 4800 baud rate, that include majority of GPS on the market today. see: what GPS can/cannot be used

We have been receiving enquiries for such connecting cables from time to time.
The reason we did not support it was mainly a commercial decision: the development cost is quite high and the expected quantity of sale is low. After all it is an expensive set up and afforded (and required) only by small number of professional photographers.

Nikon does have a solution in providing MC-35 cable.
But it is expensive (even though the cost is a very small percentage of the camera/lens! That is probably how Nikon price their accessories).
The frustration most users are finding is that MC-35 is not readily available and one usually has to wait weeks/months for the order!

Our GPS cables  are unique, versatile (upgradeable) and affordable. As tradition of our innovative ideas, we make the main cables (Garmin E or R type, Rino, Foretrex, Magellan, Lowrance  etc) which you can connect to many interchangeable PDA and PC interfaces, and now the Nikon Camera interface, so that you can add additional interfaces (or change) at low cost, as and when you change a new PDA. Our GPS cables are compatible with most recent GPS as follow:
Garmin E-type (prefix-GE) - eMap, all Etrex (except color models), Geko 201/301 see: what GPS can/cannot be used
Garmin R-type (prefix-GR) - all Garmin GPS with Round plugs   GPSV/60/76/72  Older GPS output NMEA 2.0 so cannot be used see : what GPS can/cannot be used
Garmin Rino (prefix-GO) - Rino 110, 120, 130.
Garmin Foretrex (prefix-GX2) - Foretrex 201, 101
Magellan (prefix-GM) - SporTrak and current Meridian series.
Magellan (prefix-GS) - eXplorist 100/200/300 - though workable, it is not recommended for use with Nikon Camera
Lowrance (prefix-GL) - iFinder, iFinder Pro - These output NMEA 2.0 so incompatible!
Lowrance (prefix-GF) - iFinder H2O, Map/Music, Hunt, PhD  These output NMEA 2.0 so incompatible!

If you already have the above GPS, all you need is the connecting cable.
If you have visited this page before we have now decided to simplify things a little by doing away with GND1 and sell only GND2 which work with all GPS listed, whereas GND1 (and MC-35) did not work with some GPS (such as Foretrex/Geko) though GND1 cost less.
Features:
Compact, light and short.
Connect to our extensive range of handheld GPS cables
3.5 mm jack for connecting optional shutter release PTT1
Cable length: 15 cm
Interface cable: GND2D200  + GND2 + GEDC + PTT1 (option) + eTrex-
To connect your Nikon and GPS, you need 2 parts - Nikon interface - GND2, and GPS cable - e.g. GEDC for eTrex.
With our GPS cable system, you do not need the PC cable of your GPS, though you have the option to use that with G9GND2.

We apologise for making available such large selection of cables !!! If you are confused as to what to choose please do not hesitate to write to us for clarification and/or advice, stating what GPS (if any) you have, and how (in what situation) you want to use it (assuming you already have the camera).

Some people are concerned over the push on type connector we are using having experienced the shutter releases using the same type.
However, we consider the push on type connector better than the screw on type of the nikon original. We find that it can take up to a minute to connect/disconnect the screw on connector while the push in type can be connected/disconnected quickly. .
Many customers' dislike of the push in connector may be due to the connector they have used being tight and not well fitted. You will find that the connector we have made push in and pull out easily. Though there is a possibility that it can easily be pulled out by accident, we find that once it is connected there is hardly any chance of any pulling action on the cable so this is not an issue.

Connect your GPS to PDA and camera at the same time - if you ever want to do that, it is possible with our cables. See examples here. Just treat your camera as another PDA.

Wireless remote shutter release - we are working on one for use with GND2, there is yet no schedule for it finished date or pricing..
DIY GPS cable and shutter release - you want to make your own? Here is how.

FAQ:
Q: What is the difference between GND2 and Nikon's MC-35?
A: They are the same type of device - TTL>RS232 converter - for connecting Nikon cameras to GPS with RS232 serial output. But the electronics are different. Also not all GPS have the same NMEA serial output. So it is possible that some GPS will work with MC-35 but not GND2, and vice versa. All the GPS we have tested so far that work with MC-35 also work with GND2. But Garmin Geko and Foretrex will not work with MC-35 but our GND2 does.!

Q: What happened to GND1 which was available originally?
A: When we first designed GND1, it was to be compatible with Nikon's MC-35. Of all the GPS we had available for tests, all worked with MC-35 and GND1. We did not have Foretrex 101 or Geko 201 at the time but we assumed that they were compatible as they conform to specification required by Nikon. As we are making hotshoe mounts for Foretrex and Geko so we eventually got these GPS. Then we discovered, to our surprise, that MC-35 did not work with Foretrex or Geko 201, nor did our GND1. Therefore we had to redesign the interface thus resulting GND2, which included compatiblility with Foretrex and Geko as well as all other GPS listed. For the first few days of their release, we were selling both GND1 and GND2 at the same time, with GND1 costing less. But we then decided to simplify the matter and sold only GND2.

Q: What is the best GPS to use?
A: This is not the sort of question we should answer. There are many GPS on the market that are suitable. What we can say is that we offer connecting cables for many models and may be that is where you should start. But even the list of supported models is long. Different models offer different features and at different prices to suit different individuals. If you have never used a GPS before, you may have been missing out some fun, let alone the usefulness of it, as you are contemplating the use with the camera now.
As for use solely with the camera, a cheap, small handheld is best. - We would recommend Garmin foretrex 101, Geko 201/301 because of their small size. These can be mounted on the camera hotshoe with a DIY adapter (aka redhen system), or with our GCM1.
If you do not want to mount the GPS on the hotshoe, then any GPS will do. The normal cable is long enough so that you can put the GPS in your pocket of camera bag if you are shooting without tripod everywhere and anywhere. There are lots other use of the GPS other than connecting to the camera. We are sure most customers would already have a GPS when visiting here to look for cables. Having said that, we would recommend a small standalone handheld with its own display so you know what is going on by looking at it. A mouse GPS is never ideal even if it works, a bluetooth GPS is also not recommended though we are looking into the feasibility of a bluetooth module which many may prefer but there are many limitations to overcome so we are not hopeful at this stage.
On balance of size, features, performance and usefullness, we would recommend you to have a look at Garmin 60 series particularly the newer color ones (not cheap though) which may be the best handheld GPS on today's market.

Q: My GPS is not listed as supported by Nikon, will it work?
A: We are sure Nikon tested only a few models (so do we!). As long as your GPS can be configured to out NMEA 2.1 (or newer), it should work. And that covers most GPS on today's market. Oh yes, another requirement is that it has a serial output with option for PC serial connection. Some newer GPS have done away with serial port and only support USB (such as Garmin eTrex Color models, Magellan eXplorist), so these models are not suitable.
If your GPS is on our list, it should be compatible (we have tested some, but not all).
