Connecting USB cable to Magellan eXplorist 4/5/600
Caustion: ALWAYS screw on the cable to the GPS first and then connect to PC or power. Because the contact pins on the GPS and the cable are well exposed. If you connect USB cable to PC and/or power first and then try to screw the cable on to GPS, the power pins can easily get contact with the data pins, or with +ve and -ve reversed, thus damaging the GPS.
The Magellan supplied USB cable consist of both USB data cable (3,4,5,6) and DC powerconnection (1,2)

The oval shaped connector is symmetrical and many users wonder which is the correct way to connect the cable as it can be connected either way - turned 180 degrees  (UP or DOWN with the original Magellan USB cable - RIGHT or LEFT with our USB cable

If you turn the USB cable 180 degree, it is changed into a power cable as USB power pins 4/5 go into DC power pins 1/2.

The correct way to connect USB cable:
This is the correct way to connect USB data cable
If the GPS is on and connected to PC, this menu option appears:
1. File Transfer - to/from PC (XP/ME) or PPC (with USB Host Cable) - GPS appears as HARDDISK. No driver is needed on your PC to use this.
2. NMEA Data Comm  - this is SERIAL connection - DISPLAY NMEA DATA on PC (XP) for navigation (moving map) or compatible software. You must have installed the Magellan USB>Serial driver on your PC to use this.
3. Power only

If you select power only, the GPS is powered by USB,  but internal battery is NOT charged.
If you select NMEA or Drive, GPS is still powered by USB port

If the GPS is off and connected to PC, internal battery is charged.

This is also the correct way to connect DC adapter dongle - DCMEX

Connecting USB cable as power cable:
This is the POWER only connection using USB data cable.

If it is connected to PC, no menu option appears, battery is charged while the GPS is on, as if external DC power (e.g. AC Adapter) is used.

USB data has no effect with this connection.

Caution: connecting Mini-U cable this way is not recommended as the wires are very thin and not capable of allowing higher current than 500mA that normal USB port provides.
If you connect Mini-U cable this way and to a high output (more than 600mA) car USB adapter, damage to the Mini-U cable and/or GPS may result.

Connecting USB cable to a PPC:
You can connect eXplorist with USB cable to a PPC with USB Host capability via the PPC's USB host cable or cradle.
PPCs with USB Host capability and we support with cables for are: Fujitsu Loox 7xx, Toshiba e33x/7xx, Acer n30
There are many other PPCs with USB host capability (but we do not support with cables) such as Toshiba e4xx/8xx, Eten (many models) and some other less popular models.
GPS appears as an external harddisk in File Explorer so you can transfer files (waypoints, etc) between PPC and GPS.
Driver may be need, depending on rom version of your PPC. If needed we suggest you use the RATOC mass storage driver
At present it is not possible to connect any PDA for use with Navigation software as eXplorist does not have serial port for external connection. It is possible through USB only if a USB>serial driver is available from Magellan or other party. And we doubt if Magellan will ever be able to release such driver.

Note: Although Magellan states that only XP is supported, you can actually use the cable and GPS with Win ME, at least for File Transfer mode. No driver is necessary for this. GPS appears as another drive.
May be XP support refers to NMEA driver (USB>serial converter) only and/or PC utility software. We have not tested the utility software (e.g Geocache Manager) so we cannot verify it.

FAQ:

Do you have USB cable for Axim X50 so that I can connect with the GPS?
The only PPCs with USB Host capability and we support with cables for are: Fujitsu Loox 7xx, Toshiba e33x/7xx, Acer n30. All other PPCs we support (see the top/bottom menu) with cables do not have USB Host capability therefore it is not possible to make a USB host cable for these PDAs. We do not have cables for other PDAs not listed. If any is planned it is usually announced in the news and will be available in a short time.

Can I have a longer USB  cable?
Almost all our customers prefer a shorter/lighter cable to carry around. As most are using laptop or desktop with front USB connection or hub, a shorter cable is usually preferred. If you do need a longer cable to connect to the back of your desktop, you can buy an USB extension cable (M>F) with various lengths which is easily available from most computer shops for no more than a few dollars.
