Foretrex/Forerunner
201 information - connecting
data cable
If
you are using Foretrex 101
with the data cable to connect to PDA, there is no problem. If you are using 201,
please read on.
Garmin
sell 201 in USA
and Europe. Usually accessories of most GPS sold both sides of Atlantic are identical
with the exception of AC adapter being different voltage and plug types.
But there is a big
difference with Foretrex 201.
The USA version is
supplied with a cradle like this
, the cradle is snapped onto 201
when needed, a separate AC adapter which plugs into the cradle when needed, and
a data cable which can be plugged into the cradle when needed. To
use our data cables with PDA interfaces, you need to attach the cradle
onto 201 and
then connect the data cable. The whole set up is quite neat and the combination
makes it ideal for connecting to a PDA for outdoor use.
Apparently,
it is very different with the European version. It
is supplied with a cradle/AC adapter molded into one like the spare option from
Garmin like this
. You connect the data cable in the middle of that ac adapter/cradle combo. So
it is not a very good setup if you want to connect Foretrex
201 with a PDA for outdoor use.
It does not appear
that Garmin is supplying the one-piece cradle
as an option. Foretrex 201
owners should petition Garmin to offer that. Prospective customers who intend
to connect Foretrex to a PDA for outdoor use, we would strongly recommend you
buy a 101 instead
of 201.
Latest information
(June) we are getting is that even the USA versions are supplied with an AC adapter
like the European version (same as the one Garmin offer as a spare/replacement).
May
be Garmin has never thought users would connect a Foretrex 201 to a PDA?
So Garmin should take
note to address this.
101,
because of using AAA batteries, is slightly thicker than 201
using it on its own. If you need to connect data cable, 201
need the cradle to be attached so making it
thicker than 101. Therefore 101 is better suited for using data cable/PDA combination.
