Connection between Sony Clie and Z5/J5/Z7

for internet/email (Z5/J5/Z7 do not support fax)

There are 3 ways you can connect Clie with Z5/J5/Z7 for internet/email:

1. Serial Sync Cable (PS9S) + Null Modem Adapter (DB9N) + Data Cable (SNZ5D / SNDJ5)
2. Clie Modem cable (PSSM) + Data Cable (SNZ5D / SNDJ5)
3. Clie to Z5/J5/Z7 Modem cable (PSZ5M / PSJ5M)

Depending on your requirements, choose the best option that suits your needs.
If you want to use laptop as well as Clie, then go for option 1 or 2.
If you just use Clie with Z5/J5/Z7, or you do not already have/require PS9S/SNZ5D/SNDJ5 then option 3 is the best choice.
If you already have SNZ5D / SNDJ5, then you have all 3 options.
Whatever your requirement is, option 3 is best because it is a short cable specially for connecting Z5/J5/Z7 and you can carry it in your pocket all the time.

(you may copy and print this out for private use)
Here is the configuring instruction (for Z5 and J5/Z7),  follow EXACTLY !

Important: Your phone is NOT configured for data by default.
If you have not used the phone for data before, you must configure it:
Settings>Call settings>Data services>Serial speed>Automatic (press jog dial)
Automatic serial speed is best for most applications, although almost all speed should work for data.

Configuring Clie :

Go to System screen and tap “Prefs”
Tap right top corner and select “Connection”
Tap “New”
Name: Sony Z5 (or any other name you wish)
Connect to: Modem  (or Serial to Modem)
    Via: Cradle / Cable
    Dialing: TouchTone
    Volume: Low
Tap “Details”
    Speed : 115,200 bps
    Flow Ctl : Automatic
    Init String : AT&F&D2
Tap “OK” and “OK”
Tap right top corner and select “Network”
Service : xxxxxx (Your ISP, any name you wish)
User Name: xxxxxx (Your ISP log on user name)
    Password : xxxxxx
    Connection : Sony Z5
Tap “details”
    Connection Type : PPP
Idle timeout : 3 minutes (or never)
Query DNS : enter the Primary/Secondary DNS of your ISP, if needed.
    IP Address : check Automatic
Tap “OK”
Tap “phone” to enter Phone Setup screen
Phone # :  enter your ISP number WITH A FULL STOP ( . ) BETWEEN EVERY NUMBER !!
e.g. if your ISP number is 0845-123456, enter  0.8.4.5.1.2.3.4.5.6
If your ISP number is 10 (or 12) digits or less you may have to add ONE  OR MORE COMMA (,)
before the phone number like this:    , , 0.8.4.5.1.2.3.4.5.6
(Add one (,) at a time until the phone can successfully dial out.)
Tap “OK”
Tap “Connect”  - the phone should display “Outgoing Data” and  the ISP number it is dialing
If the phone fails to dial and display :"Error: phone number is too long or contains invalid
characters (0x1109)" , go back to the phone setup and add a COMMA (,) in front of the number
and try again (and again) until the phone can successfully dial out.
    (if your ISP number is short - like 4 digits – add 4 (, , , , ) COMMAs initially)
If the phone fails to dial and display: Error: Modem not found (0x1106),  disconnect all cables,
switch off phone and back on, then connect back all cables and try again.

If it still cannot dial out, check every setting from the beginning, particularly for something that
should not be there (script? init string? uncheck anything that should not be checked)

If you are successfully connected to your ISP, a “Disconnect” tab appears at the bottom of Network screen.
Now you can browse the web and check email (with suitable software, Eurdora is recommended for email and Avantgo for internet, which are available for download free)

When you have finished your internet/email session, go back to Prefs-Network screen and tap “Disconnect” (you may also have to terminate the call manually on the phone)

Other Tips:
Connect the cable to Clie first and then the phone end.
If you are planning on a long internet session make sure you have plenty of power left in your Clie as the cable also draws power from the Clie and there is no other way to recharge your Clie but to disconnect the cable.

This instruction is specifically for Clie>Z5/J5/Z7 only (with our cables). Other phones/cables WILL NOT work.
We are developing cables for other phones (GSM) and will announce when available.
Please do not write to us inquiring cables for CDMA phones. For obvious reasons, we are not in a position to develop these.
