FAQ:
Q: Can all Garmin/magellan GPS be used?
A: Basic
requirement for GPS to be able to use BT adapter
is NMEA 4800
output AND a serial interface.
Therefore almost all Garmin/Magellan
GPS with appropriate cable can be used.
Exceptions
are: Forerunner/Foretrex,
and some new Garmin GPS that do not have serial interface like VistaC/LegendC,
these do not work.
We
also have a couple of reports (up to June 8) that GPS
60 does not work. (Garmin GPS with both USB/serial
ports are questionable)
Q: Can
all GPS with a serial cable be used?
A:
No, most will
work, but not all.
The GPS must output NMEA,
have serial interface,
AND can work
on its own without connecting to other software/hardware. That covers over 90%
of the GPS on the market. Some serial GPS needs other software/hardware to "wake
up" the GPS to work (e.g. Delorme/RandMcNally/Digitraveler) so these GPS
will not work with the bluetooth adapter.
Q:
Can rechargeable batteries be used, and how long will it last?
A: Optimum voltage
input is 3V (Alkaline). But good rechargeable NiMH batteries (usually more than
2.6V), which are cheap to run and recommended, can also be used. A good
properly charged set of 2000mAh NiMH batteries
should give you around 40 hours of continuous use. Good brand alkaline batteries
can last more than 80 hours!.
Q: Does it work with other serial devices other
than GPS?
A:
Unlikely/possibly. In theory it might work. BTA01
is a cable replacement like many serial BT dongles
on the market selling for $100-200, but it has only Tx/Rx/Gnd connections instead
of the 5/7/9 pins of a full serial dongle. Because BTA01
is designed to work with GPS, the baud rate is fixed at 4800bps which is the only
output for majority of GPS. The baud rate in the bluetooth adapter cannot be changed.
If the serial device needs only Tx/Rx/Gnd connections and can be configured to
communicate at 4800bps, and works continuously when switched on (without needing
to connect other hardware/software), then it might work.
Q:
Can I downlaod/upload data to/from my PDA and GPS?
A:
Same answer above applies to this one. e.g. if you have a Garmin GPS, when you
want to manage data on your GPS, you need to change the interface to Garmin protocol,
and Garmin protocol (for data transfer) works usually at 9600. So the answer is
no - for Garmin GPS. Of course we do not have many GPS models to test. If the
baud rate of the GPS can be configured to 4800 while in Garmin protocol, it might
work (with suitable software). And we doubt you can do that.
If
you do need to download/upload data to a PDA, we suggest you use a cable.
However, we have
tested Magellan Meridian
with OziExplorer
to download waypoints from the GPS and it DOES work.
We do not know about other Magellan,
but Meridian
appears to work at 4800 for data transfer.
We
must stress that BTA01
is designed for NMEA data at 4800 for Navigation use. Other function is not guaranteed.
Q: My PDA and the adapter is connected successfully,
but the software does not seem to receive any GPS signal?
A:
You must configure the GPS to output NMEA 4800. If it is NMEA 9600, it will not
work. If your GPS does not show the baud rate, it is usually 4800 by default.
Also see that your GPS is getting a fix. Some GPS (e.g. some Magellan) will not
send any data until it gets a fix.
Q: Can
I use car power?
A:
Why would you use that? 2 x AA batteries is very convenient, cheap (rechargeable)
and last at least a day (continous use) without the need to change batteries.
Adding car power would also inflate the size of the adapter and cost.
Q:
How do I know when the battery is nearly exhausted as there is no indicator?
A: Unfortunately,
as the battery is not built-in (fixed), it is not possible to integrate a battery
indicator as all sorts of batteries may be used. An indicator for one type of
battery (alkaline) will give false indication for other type (rechargeable) because
of the voltage variation. The variation can be enormous. Also the small-size design
of the adapter cannot accommodate additional circuits needed to have this built
in. We suggest you carry a spare set of batteries and by experience you should
be able to predict the battery life of your own usual batteries.
Q:
Can I power the GPS in car?
A:
Unfortunately, we do not make any cable that allows you to power any handheld
GPS in car (they must use batteries). If you have to do that, you can purchase
the original (or compatible) combo serial cable from another supplier and connect
it to G9BTA.
Q: With addition of BT adapter, is it now possible
to run 2 GPS applications at the same time using one GPS?
A:
Interesting question. You can only run 2 applications at the same time if you
have 2 serial ports. If you PDA has BT and a normal bottom serial port, then you
can do that. You need a cabled interface on the PDAs that we support, as well
as BT adapter, and GPS cable splitter which connects to
the usual GPS cable on the GPS end.
