Can you distinguish between Li-ion and Ni-MH
batteries? Not by looking at it, although you could feel the weight difference.

For Nokia phones, there is a simple/practical
test if you have netmonitor enabled. In menu 23, which is for charging
and battery state (in Logomanager), the temperature of the battery is shown
at the left bottom corner IF it is Li-ion battery (so the value should
be between 20-30). Like this:
i.e. 29 is the temperature of the battery in celsius.
Temperature of Ni-MH battery cannot be shown so it is always zero.

For Siemens C/M/S35i, there is
a built discharge function for Ni-MH batteries.
Select Menu > Setup > Phone
>Battery Care > Yes >
If the battery is Ni-MH, it displays
"Charger not connected" (you have to connect the charger to discharge the
battery).
If the battery is Li-ion, it displays
"Not required"
However, we have come across some Li-ion batteries for Siemens C/M/S35i
which are treated by the phone as Ni-MH battery and proceed to discharge
the battery (if a charger is connected).
This is because the circuit used in the battery is for Ni-MH battery,
although there may/may not be any ill efffect on the use.
